Farmed in the remote village of Hasayan in the flat, dusty plains of India’s Uttar Pradesh region, ruh gulab is harvested between March and April, hand-picked at dawn to preserve the delicate petals and precious essential oils. This oil is distilled for two days by fourth-generation distillers using ancient hydro-distillation methods in copper pots called dhegs. Considered one of the rarest rose oils in the world, it takes 4,000kg to yield just 800g of oil. Revered by ancient and modern cultures, the rose has been used for medicinal, spiritual, cosmetics and perfumery purposes since time immemorial.
